Indeed, the engine alternator's function is to supply electrical energy to the engine via the battery as well as to the other accessories (lighting, heating, air conditioning ...). When the engine is not running, it is the battery that fulfils this function, but it only allows a limited range. When the alternator fails, the battery is no longer charged and the car is guaranteed to break down.

The alternator belt is used to transmit power from the engine to the alternator and the various accessories (power steering pump, air conditioning compressor etc.).
